In the event Orangeburg County Consolidated School District Three has to alter its schedule or close due to inclement weather, local stations (radio and television) in the staff's viewing areas will be notified by 6:00 a.m.
Please refrain from calling district office staff. Stay tuned in to your local stations.
The decision to close district schools will be based primarily on the condition of district roads; however, some weight may be given to the conditions of roads in areas from which many district employees commute. If roads in most surrounding areas (Sumter, St. George, Summerville, Orangeburg, Bowman, Harleyville, Moncks Corner) become impassable or quite hazardous, a decision to close district schools will likely be made, regardless of road conditions in the district. However, in this case, a decision to close would have to affect a major portion of the district's staff.
The decision to close schools is influenced mainly by the condition of secondary roads. Thus, a surrounding district or districts may be closed even though main roads are open and accessible to commuting employees. In such cases, if district schools are open, commuting staff is expected to report to work.
In case of a hurricane, the decision to close schools will be based on the forecast for Orangeburg County, evacuation routes, and whether schools will be needed for shelters.
